Pa-Daung or Long Neck

I went to see the long neck tribe people with the other volunteers from the elephant camp during our down time. Wow, I was little when I first heard about them, actually I read about them at my Oma and Opa's house in the Guinness book of World Records - that was a LOONG time ago.

Originally the long neck people are from Burma. Way back when Burma had a very greedy king and wanted all of the women for his wife. So some of the women started to adorn their body with jewelry and and piercings and tattoos so that the king would not like them and would not want to marry them. Their neck jewelry raised their necks and they found that the women with the longest neck was the most attractive woman. So this tradition on extending their necks began. they typically wear lots of jewelry and strive to have long necks.

The village has beautiful waterfalls as you walk in. The images below are of women from this tribe. They work hard ever day making scarves, wool and jewelry to sell to tourists. They don't mind people coming to see them and to take pictures because they like to promote their culture-they want everyone to know about them and their culture.
